Ignited by a trip to Singapore Zoo, Phoenix’s studio production has revolved around three key themes: the animal (or monster) as companion; childhood, adolescence and coming out; dreams, mythology and spiritual experience.

Following Dali’s idea of the ‘hypnagogical image’, Phoenix uses drawing as a place for ideas and images to jump, creep, scuttle or slither out of my unconscious mind. For his decorated wall The Night Has a Thousand Eyes, the image of the night-time bedroom is synonymous with the artist’s studio; it is simultaneously safe and frightening. The furry child, The Twins is your childhood companion - the friendly monster under your bed. And it is part of the much larger, darker creature watching over you as you sleep.

The video works - assembled from iphone footage, field recordings, YouTube clips, pop music, and conversations with friends - celebrate liberation, companionship and journeys into the unknown. All watched over by the great god Pan.
