In the selection of works showcased for his graduation, the artist is hopeful that viewers will be able to relate to the premortem narrative by making connections through the four installations and possibly form their own resonance with the subject matter. The installations consist of the artist’s childhood vision of his mortality; a series of portraits taken from 1963 - October 2022; two portraits he had taken recently at Tokyo accompanied by the signed consent; and a set of tissue papers embellished with prints of African Tulip flower emblem encased in a solid metal form. The floral image has emerged and taken many forms within his practice since October 6, 2022, when he first faced the possible demise of his most loved one.

Lim Teck Peng

Teck Lim, a photographer and artist, weaves performance, installations, and photography in creating an oeuvre of “Premortem” artworks. The word “Mortem” which means death, is rarely used alone and, most often used in the word postmortem or premortem. Why the artist uses the term premortem as describing his artworks is less linked to its domineering medical connotation, but more towards that of using it to describe the time that leads towards the inevitable, which is death in this context.

With consent being an important part of his work, he uses the term premortem as a framing device in clarifying time, and to assist his subjects and collaborators to focus on “everything before death“ as his main inquiry.

Teck’s recent exploration of his mortality artworks has brought him to showcase his works through a Transcultural Collaboration organised by Zurich University of the Arts (ZHDK), held across Switzerland, Yogyakarta and Singapore, and he was also selected to partake in open studio and exhibition at Tokyo University of the Arts (TUA), in 2023. Actively involved in the local art scene, he most recently exhibited in a group show, Leaves Nothing but Footprints, held at Starch in October 2023, and restaged a performative artwork Latency at, Gesture Serialized, at Cereal Box, Peace Centre, in January 2024.
